High bit depth

Applicable to files with bit depths greater than 8.

Access the option from File>Preferences>Images>Open section.

Always ask is NOT checked : Microlucida software applies the settings displayed under When Image Bit Depth is Unknown in the Imaging tab.

1. Specify the settings in the Unknown Bit Depth window. Remember that your choice for bit depth only affects the display of the image, not the underlying data.
Use Max Pixel

Microlucida software selects the lowest bit depth that includes the highest pixel value found within the image.

Example:

If the highest pixel value found in the image is 3965, then the minimum bit depth that could include this value is 12 since the range for a 12-bit image is 0-4096 (4096=212). Neurolucida will use 12 as the bit depth.

12 may not be the actual bit depth range of the image (i.e., the image could have been created in a 16-bit image space), but the maximal pixel value contained with that image is still 3965.

Use “x” bits per pixel

If you know the full bit depth range for the image, select it from the drop-down menu.

Always Ask

When selected, the Unknown Bit Depth window is displayed when opening the image.

2. To save the bit depth, save your image file as an MBF .jpx/jp2 file (the standard JPEG2000 format is limited to 8 bits).

   The Image Adjustment histogram displays the correct range.
